How You Can Give

There are various ways to make a gift to our Fraternity.

Each may be more advantageous to use depending on a particular time in your life or financial circumstances.

The following are just some of the options that you may wish to consider.

Ways of Giving

To Your

Fraternity

Gifts of Cash

Cash is still the most popular way to make charitable gifts.  Your gift of cash becomes available for immediate use by The Masonic Center to meet the annual obligations of fulfilling its mission of education and restoration. In addition to unrestricted support, there are a number of restricted purposes that you may wish it consider.  Most gifts of cash are fully deductible if you itemized your federal tax returns.

Gifts of Stock

Giving long-term appreciated stock offers you a two-fold tax saving. First, you avoid paying any capital gains tax on the increase in value of your stock.  In addition, you receive a tax deduction for the full fair market value of the stock on the date of the gift.  For income tax purposes the value of such gifts may be deducted up to 30 percent adjusted gross income.

For example: if you purchased some stock many years ago for $1000, and it is now worth $10,000, an outright gift of that stock to The Dayton Masonic Foundation would result in a charitable deduction of $10,000.  In addition you permanently avoid paying capital gains tax on the $9000 of appreciation.

Real Estate

Gifts of appreciated real estate are like gifts of appreciated stock.  If you have owned the property for more than one year, you may deduct as a charitable contribution the fair market value of real estate while avoiding all capital gains taxes.

Insurance

If you own a life insurance policy that is no longer needed, consider it as a vehicle for charitable gift.  To receive a charitable deduction, name The Dayton Masonic Foundation as both the owner and beneficiary of the policy.  If the policy has a cash value, you can take a charitable deduction approximately equal to the cash value at the time of the gift.  In addition, if annual premiums are still to be made if you continue to pay them, those premiums will become tax deductible each year.  It is easy to contribute a life insurance policy to The Dayton Masonic Foundation.  Please check with your life insurance agent for details on which forms to complete.

Corporate Matching Gifts

Many businesses and corporations will match gifts to The Dayton Masonic Foundation made by a Mason and sometimes a spouse.  This enables your gift to the Foundation to be doubled (and sometimes tripled, depending on the matching gift policy of the company).  Please contact the corporate giving officer of your company (or your spouses) to secure the proper forms.

Bequests

You may wish to consider the Foundation in your will.   There are several options from which to choose - you can leave a percentage of your estate, a specific dollar amount, or you may name The Dayton Masonic Foundation as the residual beneficiary.  Gifts made through bequests traditionally provide all-important support to the permanent endowment fund. Naming opportunities are available, depending on the amount of the bequests.  It definitely pays to do some advance planning with your attorney and other professional advisors.

We hope you will consider a charitable bequest in your will to benefit The Dayton Masonic Foundation while you save estate tax dollars at the same time.  In many cases, you can easily add us to your will through simple amendment called a codicil; that way, your entire will does not have to be redrafted.
